Important Notice:

We are not currently hiring for Investment Associates at the University of Melbourne.

🙋 Whats in it for you?

NextGen Ventures Associates are given the unique opportunity to gain experience in VC, having end-to-end responsibility for the investment decision-making process (note: this is an unpaid role). You’ll be exposed to deal sourcing, investment analysis, portfolio management, and talent management - and get the opportunity to make NextGen’s first investment (you’ll get carry if so). Ultimately, becoming part of the storyline of Australia’s first student-run VC fund will differentiate you from any other student coming out of university in Australia.

By the end of the year, you would’ve contributed to a generational idea, put a unique experience under your belt, met the most ambitious students in the ecosystem, and potentially identified Australia’s next unicorn🦄

Our promise to you is that we’ll help you learn and grow at an extremely high rate. We’ll do this by giving you autonomy in your role and by putting you through a VC Bootcamp (we currently have 8 VCs involved so far), connecting you with professional VCs to mentor you ongoingly and awesome student founders (plus much more).

🧠 What you'll be doing!

Ultimately, you’ll be learning a sh*t ton about startups and venture capital with us by having end-to-end ownership of the investment process at your university.

  • Training and mentoring

    • NextGen will run our VC Bootcamp to train you up to be a killer venture capitalist. We currently have 8+ professional VCs who will be joining NextGen Ventures to deliver the content and then provide mentorship and feedback throughout your journey

  • Sourcing new startups for investments

    • You will be responsible for finding and identifying high-quality, student-founded startups across your campus and state, building strong relationships with them, and bringing those with the highest potential to the evaluation stage

    • You’ll be attending events, building your personal brand, creating partnerships and relationships, and checking out our inbounds to source the best startups

    • You’ll begin to develop relationships at your campus to serve you for the long term, by becoming the face and voice of student entrepreneurship

  • Evaluating and selecting the best student startups

    • Once you find all the best startups on campus, you’ll evaluate and narrow down to the most promising startups that are ready for investments, by analysing their pitch decks, conducting founder meetings, completing research, and collaborating and discussing with the rest of the team → you will be supported throughout this process by Principals, Leadership team and VC mentors

    • You will be trained and mentored by professional VCs so that your due diligence covers a comprehensive understanding of each startups team, product, market, and traction

  • Other activities

    • We’ll have plenty of in-person events, social catchups, off-sites, and 1-on-1s to build bonds with one another → the next generation of startup founders, operators, and investors

    • NextGen also operates like a startup, so you’ll have the opportunity to be an active driver in all of our initiatives, aligning yourself with the benefit and growth of the firm

Requirements

  • You’ve got some (or maybe all 👀) of the following traits →

    • passionate about tech, startups, or VC, intellectually curious and willing to learn, you enjoy taking initiative and making things happen, analytically minded, and can create genuine rapport and relationships with others

  • You are a current student at an Australian university and will graduate end of 2024 or later (all degrees and study fields are welcome ie. PhD, MBA, CompSci, Eng, etc)

  • You can commit a minimum of 8 hours per week (flexibility with exam season) until the end of 2024 with the opportunity to continue in 2025.

  • “Joining NextGen has single-handedly been one of the most valuable and educational experiences. As someone driven by their curiosity, becoming involved with a group of like-minded students who aspire to create something as impactful and novel as Australia’s first student-lend venture capital fund was a no-brainer. Importantly, contacts with industry experts are never out of reach, and the tools to foster a career within the start-up/VC ecosystem are always close to hand.”
